Porn Addiction Treatment

Like any other addiction, porn addiction is a serious threat to one’s happiness, relationships, work, and social lives. Often, it can be an embarrassing addiction to admit, and unfortunately, many addicts do not seek help until they become depressed and have significant relationship problems. Sometimes the issue of porn does not arise during counseling, as the addict does not want to admit it, and a counselor not specialized in porn addiction treatment might not think to ask.

What Is Porn Addiction?

Porn addiction is a common form of sex addiction, with many similar symptoms and letdowns to drug and alcohol addictions. However, in this day and age with the Internet and social media providing easier access to porn at any time, porn is a lot more accessible than drugs.

Five Stages of Porn Addiction

To understand how one becomes addicted to porn, here is a breakdown of five stages associated with porn addiction:

1. Early Exposure and Poor Sex Education

Combined with poor knowledge and education about sex, the earlier in one’s life one is exposed to porn, the more likely he or she is to get addicted to it in the future. Children and adolescents who are uneducated about sex often use porn as their educational tool.

2. Addiction

Addiction is the stage when porn becomes a part of everyday life – watching it at work, at home, before the shower, whenever; it becomes difficult to go without it.

3. Escalation

At this point for many addicts, ‘regular’ porn doesn’t interest the addict, and they begin to search for and watch more graphic, aggressive porn.

4. Desensitizing

This is when even the dirtiest porn no longer excites the addict, and they want nothing more than to discover that porn high once again.

5. Acting Out

Many sex addicts will describe porn as a cyclical part of their out-of-control sexual behavior. It prompts them with an energy that leads to other behavior outside of their relationships.

Symptoms of Porn Addiction

Porn addiction is a significant issue and can significantly escalate if untreated. Additional symptoms of porn addiction include:

  • Obsessed with sexual imagery
  • Unable to stop looking at porn, even when they want to
  • Loss of interest in relationships
  • Anger when accused of being addicted to porn
  • Aggressiveness
  • Depression

Types of Recovery

The first step to recovery is admitting there is a problem and seeking help. A strong support system (family, friends, and/or a therapist) is beneficial to the entire recovery process and can have a positive impact on an addict’s recovery.

Fortunately, there are many options available to porn addicts, from couple’s counseling to outpatient treatment. Almost any type of rehabilitation treatment can be geared towards pornography addicts if done properly. Here are a few popular choices:
